A female boxer tells her story of breaking all the rules in a real boxing ring!

Toronto (August xx, 2017): Toronto’s Soulo Theatre Festival is excited to announce a Pop Up showing of Newsgirl, written and performed by Toronto legend Savoy Howe, founder of Toronto Newsgirls Boxing Club. Under the direction of Soulo Artistic Director Tracey Erin Smith, Howe brings 25 years of herstory of women’s boxing and mind-blowing stories of how she broke all barriers – and one nose –into Newsgirl which she performs in a real boxing ring (!) at Toronto Newsgirls Boxing Club (388 Carlaw Ave #108) for four shows only – September 21-24.

Premiered in May at the Soulo Theatre Festival for one night as its Opening Night Gala to a sold-out, cheering crowd, Newsgirl is a not-to-be-missed site specific performance full of “grit, determination and a love affair with the speed bag…funny, moving, inspiring” (LifeWithMoreCowbell.com).

Newsgirl is a personal herstory of the world-famous Toronto Newsgirls Boxing Club by founder Savoy “Kapow!” Howe. Savoy Howe tells amazing, shocking and hilarious tales from her 25-year boxing journey that started at the Toronto Newsboys Boxing Club in ’92, including her close call with the Toronto underworld, to the 20-year anniversary of the Newsgirls Boxing Club, to how helping teach survivors of violence to box has changed hundreds of lives including her own. And the show is staged in the boxing ring at Newsgirls!

Savoy Howe is the head coach and owner of Toronto Newsgirls Boxing Club, Canada’s first female-owned and trans-positive boxing club featured in The New York Times, and a McMaster University Theatre graduate who studied with Calgary’s famed One Yellow Rabbit.

Tracey Erin Smith (SOULO Theatre Artistic Director) is an award-winning performer, writer and teacher who believes in crazy-wisdom and practices reverent irreverence. Smith is the founder of the award-winning SOULO Theatre Company, the Artistic Director of Toronto’s SOULO Theatre Festival, SOULO NYC and the Co-Founder of the Totnes SOULO Theatre Festival in England. Smith recently won a Broadway World Toronto Award for her latest solo show, MEMENTO MORI. Her plays have been Critic’s Pick in BackStage Magazine NYC, a two-time winner of ‘Best of the Toronto Fringe Festival’, and the ‘Audience Choice Award’ in New York City’s Frigid Festival. Smith presents SOULO Theatre Workshops internationally. In July 2017, SOULO Theatre debuted a new show at the Toronto Fringe Festival starring a real Rabbi, Reverend and Priest: The Clergy Project.

A portion of the tickets sales for Newsgirl will go to sending boxing supplies to women who are taking up boxing in Calcutta!
